History

On November 23, 1965, a group of piano teachers in the Greater Grand Forks area elected officers and adopted a constitution under the name of Greater Grand Forks Piano Teachers Association. The group met once a month to enrich the professional and personal lives of its members. The group met the fourth Tuesday of each month except December, usually at the Golden Hour Restaurant or the Northwest Piano Studio. Officers were:

Lon Tupa, LarimorePresident
Mrs. Robert SimmonsVice President
Sister St. Anloysiousm, St. James Convent Secretary
Mrs. Viola Sorense, East Grand Forks Treasurer

Charter members of the original group were Eleanor Johnson, Mrs. Robert Simmons, Sister St. Aloysius, Mrs. Viola Sorenson, Mrs. W.J. Horner, Ernest Larson, Sister Elizabeth, Mrs. Byrd Bidgood, Miss Laurie Donarski, Mrs. Edith Kaufmann, Mrs. John McLaughlin, Mrs. C.E. Olson , Sister St. Augustine, and from Larimore: Lon Tupa, Mrs. Gertrude Yahna, Mrs. Delos Wesbrook and Mrs. Donald West.

The group met once a month to enrich the professional and personal lives of piano teachers and those interested in furthering this vocation. The original members were not required to join NDMTA or MTNA, although many did.

15 years later, in July 1980, the group received an official charter from MTNA. A charter from NDMTA was received in September, 1980 and the name was changed to Greater Grand Forks Music Teachers Association.
