NDMTA offers Associate, Masters, and Professional certifications. The purpose of the NDMTA Certification Plan is to promote recognition of music teaching as a profession. The objectives of the plan are:
- To recognize teachers of the highest professional competence.
- To suggest guidelines for obtaining and maintaining professional growth.
- To create a practical plan which will insure the music teacher a professional
status equivalent to professions requiring similar academic training. - To identify to the public those teachers who are recognized by colleagues in the
musical profession as having met these standards.

Purpose of the Plan
The purpose of the NDMTA Certification Plan is to promote recognition of music teaching as a profession. Four specific objectives of the plan are:
- To give recognition to teachers of highest professional competence

- To create a practical plan that will ensure the music teacher the professional status equivalent to other professions requiring similar academic training
- To identify to the public those teachers who are recognized by colleagues in the musical profession as having met these standards
